mate you have every right to lose your cool. some dealers can be real turds , and i dont know why....the noise in my car came back again , and i had continuing DPF problems , 2 breakdowns and numerous other issues by 50k . full dealer service history by the way. so i complained to head office and they replaced my car for free.

What year is your car ? I got mine in July 2016. I got my timing chain fixed in 2018 finally once the dealer was able to hear the noise. when they pulled the engine apart my camshafts had lost there hardening too. Mine also had the noise come back not even a year later. I was then told that some noise is normal on start up as long as it goes away. I didn't accept that and wrote a letter to Toyota HQ and they recommended I go to another Toyota dealership for a 2nd opinion which I was going to do anyway at the next service. The 2nd dealership told me the same thing that unless it rattles all the time they won't do anything with it.

Viper , i dont agree with what those dealers said , there should be no rattle at start up if all components are working properly. Start a few others in thier yard , both new and second hand , and see if they make the noise.

I bet you that you take your car in for a trade , and they start the engine and hear the rattle , they will say that it needs major repairs and drop the valuation price.

Had recently been hearing this noise on start up, along with sometimes when it was hot a rattle/knocking, apparently they can't here it, but did a cold start and said the timing chain needs replacing. Dec 2016 76k km, purchased 6 yr warrenty when new, but they said they have to wait for Toyota australia on if they will fix it.

Has anyone had a louder noise occasionally when car is warm, not sure if noise changes due to DPF?

generally - head office will have to approve the warranty repair ( they are paying for it ) . But , head office will only do so on the report sent in by the dealer. So if there are other issues they have to be mentioned up front.
Timing chain noise would increase a bit with temperature , and can be hard to distinguish from other noises down there.
you could always ask an independent mechanic for an opinion before taking it back to the dealer.

I have a 2020 Hilux 2.8 diesel sr5 that has a what I believe timing chain rattle for 3-4 seconds at start up or now it can do it if it sits for 2-3 hours. That dealer tells me that there are no issues after 2017-2018 and that my noise is normal. Does anyone else get this or is it dealers not wanting to know about it. I had a 2017 with no noise at all.

I had mine replaced at 45k kms and now just ticked over 100k kms. Mine has the rattle for a few seconds when starting up then goes away. I noticed it doing it at about 55k kms, 10,000 kms after the chain being replaced. I have been told by 2 dealerships that its normal and that as long as the noise goes away there is no problem. Mine is a 2016 SR 4x4.

a few members on the FB page have mentioned it on the new models. As someone mentioned above , listen to a few others at the stealership and if they dont do it then yours needs attention . Email Toyota Australia and ask if thier senior engineer can get involved.

Hi
I’m new to this site. I have a 2018 hilux 1gd-ftv I had the timing chain replaced under warranty at 70 000ks the dealer done the job in 2 days they gave me a list of parts they put into the job and it was a shock that they changed all the chains and nearly everything that was associated with the timing chain set up.They explained to me that they had to take most of the top of the motor off eg: intake manifold, injectors and a few other things that I really didn’t understand about. They had to lift the engine up to be able to do something with the sump. Radiator and air con condenser out so it was a fair bit pulled apart. It all seems to be going well and the engine definitely seems quieter now and no oil leaks at 76 000ks
Just wondering how many ks people are getting out of these engines.could people post up highest kilometres and what problems to expect please

Best advice is keep on top of your services even drop the oil between to keep it fresh.
Every thing else depends on how you treat it.
Every body drives different.

Toyota must have cam across same ather issue they aren't tilling you about they don't do work for on reson.
