Disable the seat belt and key in ignition alarms!

Hi all. Long time reader, first time poster. I'm running a 2016 SR auto that has suffered the infector rattle. While the technician was inspecting the vehicle I quizzed him about the alarms suggesting he could use his scan tool to cancel them as discussed here. His instructions were as follows.

To disable the seat belt alarm unplug the small white plug under the seat next to the yellow plug. See photo here:

To disable the key alarm take off the steering column cover and disconnect the 2 wired plug nearest to the key on the ignition barrel.

Of course disabling these safety features isn't recommended and you carry these out at your own risk!

I was going to disable the key alarm but i didn't want to pull apart things unnecessary. How you remove the steering wheel column cover. I can only see one screw underneath and two behind the steering wheel ???.

Nah just turn one way and remove one then turn the other way to get to the other one.

Brenton, in 2005 - 2015 models you can disable the seatbelt beeper in the software menu on the hilux ... there's numerous threads on this forum.

Disconnecting the under-seat plug to unplug the sensor also has unknown effects on the SRS airbag system and is an undersirable shotgun approach.

Here's how in the software menu (well , 2005 - 2015 models anyway), I'd imagine it's still possible on the 2015+ model ;

Step 1. Turn ignition on and set trip to "ODO'
Step 2. Turn ignition off
Step 3. Turn on again and within 5 seconds, press and hold the tirp reset button
Step 4. After holding in the trip reset button for 10 seconds fasten the drivers seatbelt. The display should read "b-on"
Step 5. Release the trip reset button then press it again. The display should now read "b-off"
Step 6. Now turn the ignition off and release the seatbelt.
Step 7. The annoying beeper is now disabled.
Please note: If you disconnect the battery for a period of time then the beeper will be re-enabled and you will have to disable it as above again.

I tried this on the new Hilux with no luck. Has anyone else got this to work??

i could be wrong, but if unplugging that under seat white plug did infact disable airbags from working then it should bring up the airbag warning light on the dash permanently i would think, as unplugging it would be the same if something stored under the seat accidently broke the plug or wiring etc and if that in turn would stop airbags then im sure the light would come on on dash, you wouldn't think that toyota engineers would be that dumb as to allow some wiring to be unplugged or damaged and cause it to stop airbags and not make the error light come on????? I am a electronics technician by trade although i work in a different field than cars . i want to know now for certain though

Just went out to the truck and checked on my 2016 hilux SR 4x4 dual cab with the multimeter, and unplugging the small white 2 pin plug does just make the car think that the seat belt is plugged in all the time, so i can not see how it would be possible from a electronic side of things to stop the airbag system working, happy days

Yeah I guess I should concede I really have no real idea what the under seat sensor dis-engagement means for downstream computer decisions, I guess a toyota tech or wiring / logic schematic might show what the computers do with that informational input. Just wanted to warn anyone reading the thread to maybe look into it.

Either way though, on my model at least, there's a menu in the dashboard setup screen that turns the beeper off, that'd be my first port of call anyway (works for me).

I do agree though that Toyota probably wouldn't allow SRS to be compromised by something a 5 year old could inadvertently unplug, most SRS systems seem to be pretty fortified. That being said, does the sensor data only contribute to seat belt alert, or does it also give the SRS system information about occupancy? (i mean its a drivers seat so one assumes that's assumed there has to be someone driving!). Maybe different for passenger sensors (read below) .. then again maybe not given some cars are LHD, some are RHD ... they probably just treat the seats as "left seat" and "right "seat.

That said, I know in some cars though messing with the under-seat connection can wreak havoc, a Guy I've known for years was working on a 7 series beamer about a decade ago as an audio installer unplugged and removed a seat without unplugging battery ... set the whole lot of airbags off.

Very expensive insurance claim for him!

I forgot to post this bit also which comes from MAS Electronics on how SRS computer decision making occurs ;

Airbags do not deploy during every accident, and the airbag module and impact sensors work together to determine which accidents will trigger airbag deployment. Your car takes speed, occupancy sensors, and accident direction into account when your vehicle is involved in an accident.

If your car has not reached a certain speed, usually between 8-14 mph, your airbags will not deploy to avoid injuring drivers or passengers during a low-speed crash. If your passenger seat does not detect the weight of an adult, your passenger airbag will not deploy. Airbags also consider the direction of the crash through impact sensors. In the case of your vehicle being struck from the side, side airbags may deploy while frontal airbags will remain intact.
