Well just came through some decent rain with the Safari Head turned forward. Looks like I took on a bit of rain . It didn't make it past my filter though which is good, but the outside of the filter did get damp. Looks like I'll just be riding with the head turned backwards from now on. (Although it doesn't look as cool)

Anyone else had an issue like this?

I'm a bit confused by that valve... Can someone explain it? Does it let water out? Or air in? I've read that people seal it for watertight-ness but is that right?! Didnt touch mine when I installed my snorkel...

Yeah its meant to let water out, its rubber one way valve that accessible under the box on the engine side of the guard. If you have a feel around there you can find it, rubbery flap thing

Most people seal it off by taking the airbox off, i did on mine and was surprised to see how much debris and crap was in there...

Was asking cos if you have sealed it off then thats why the water is still in there, or its blocked up completely!

Nah I didn't seal it. I am pretty sure water came in the mouth of the snorkel. It was a lot of rain at some points so in that aspect I'm impressed at how well it did keeping water out. I did not cross any deep water.

Personally I didn't and wouldn't, the airbox should be under vacuum while the motor is running, so it should hold that rubber valve shut preventing water ingress, as long as there is no big restriction in your snorkel, or your filter is full of dust, you should be right I'd reckon

also If you block the valve would you run the risk of filling the intake with water

Does anyone have any tips or ideas for checking that my snorkel install is actually air/water tight?
I've installed it myself and are confident of my work, but knowing for sure will stop me holding my breath when the time comes to do my first water crossing!

Try blocking the snorkle head with paper/plastic/card and listen for any air hissing in elsewhere, or listen to see if the engine starts to struggle. That's what I was told when I did mine anyway

Yep that'll do it, the revs should rise a bit when the head is covered over....

Just wanted to update this. I took the pre-filter off of my safari and for the last 2 weeks I have had no ingress of water. (it rains fairly heavy here just about everyday now) As good as it does in very dusty conditions it is not good for very rainy conditions. So I guess I'll keep it off until those 2 months in the summer when it doesn't rain here.

HAHA, i left the plastic bag covering the snorkel intake on from when i was washing the lux, totaly forgot about it. started the truck, massive slapping/flapping noise, freaked out and as i was reaching for the key to switch it off, the truck stalled. Guess i can safely say my snorkel is waterproof!

On a side note, it was a noise that sent shivers down my spine and put my stomach in my throat with the thought of my wallet. not something i wanted to hear 1000ks outside of my dealers warranty.

Hey guys, I just lashed out and bought myself a safari snorkel for the lux. But I have noticed the head looks a little different to what i've seen around. I'ts like two pieces of moulded plastic have been fused together down the center line, rather than a one piece moulding with a replaceable grille.
Just wondering if any of you have seen/own one of these? just looks like cheap crap to me!

thats the way they come now, its a new design thats been around for a couple of years i think as mine was put on new in 2010 and looked like that...

I have an ironman snorkel inn my Lux, is there any point of changing it to a safari snorkel . And do the holes line up the same, when mounting it.

No point unless its broken

Quite possibly - they all seem to be the same design. Biggest difference is probably plastic quality and fasteners used

Looking at getting a ironman snorkel in the next few weeks are these a good snorkel or should I pay the extra and get a safari ..
also is there any prOblem with running a k&n filter with a snorkel

Pay the extra for the safari - its well designed and fits perfectly and has the best head (insert joke here)
