DPF blowing smoke, ECM update, Replacement etc

Cheers mate- shits me coz this is the best hilux ive ever owned, handles & drives way better than the 2 KUN models ive had & the others before them.

Just returned from dealership.
Left the car this morning at 0800 hrs and they called me at 1130hrs to advise all is replaced.
That was quick. Hopefully they did it properly ...

What was replaced:
- New DPF
- New 5th injector
- New 5th injector housing
- New gaskets

Here is the photo of the old 5th injector housing



And here is the new one:


I noticed couple differences from outside if anyone wants to compare
- left of that housing bolt it says "8" on the old one, on the new one it says "10"
- on the new one it says on top of it "D", whilst the old one does not have that "D".

The differences are on the inside. the old housing has a large hole like a precombustion chamber. The new housing is completely flat with only a small hole for the injector to squirt the fuel in better.
Next time we do 1 at work (after lockdown here lifts) I'll take some pics

Hey Grunf- just out of curiosity what were your DPF burns like in frequency & time/length in city traffic? My commute to work is 35km each way in normal traffic (Adelaide)- burns happen every 350km and take around 15min. Thanks in advance

Whilst driving in suburbs, burns would happen every 250-300 kms and would be done in 10 to 15 minutes, super quick, sometimes all done in less than 15kms mate.

But freeway was a whole different story, as described previously. To check and see if you have any ssues on freeway driving you'd probably need to take the car for a drive of 250 to 300 kms distance without stopping. Which I think is not possible now for most people due to current restrictions.

Cheers for that mate- open road driving for me lately has always entailed towing my boat (15ft tinny) hardly ever go for long drives without it but my open road burn figures are similar to yours. As you say cant really go for a spin & check it at the moment without the boat to see if its similar when not towing....its booked in for 60k service in a couple of weeks & ive brought it up with them to have a look at it. Thanks again for the info!

Will take some pics of the old housing once its been removed.

There is a specific ECU recal update to be done with the fitment of this housing and DPF.

Australian drivers be aware, if you are getting this new injector and new injector housing, Toyota dealerships are not aware of new software requirements which Toyota recommends to be installed in other Countries.
I dont know why there is no instruction to Australian dealerships to do the same ...

I had to fight with dealership do get this newest software, they simply dont know about it as Toyota HQ for some reason did not release it yet to Australia.
Finally I got it installed after a lot of back and forth with them. Dealership then got instruction from Toyota HQ to install it. Service manager was quite embarrassed and pissed off about the whole fiasco from Toyota HQ in regards to this.
New software version is:3F0M3000
They also need to set new cooling pulse custom setting for the 5th injector as a part of the injector and housing upgrade.

Hi mate,
I'm booked in to the dealership the week after next for a complete assessment of my DPF situation and referral to Toyota HQ, and have discussed the options of DPF and/or injector replacement.
Similar to other stories here, I had the previous fix installed about 12 months ago (including the dash display and the manual burn switch) and, while vehicle is performing perfectly OK, the regen burns seem to be around 50% of the time when I am towing, but only around every 250 km when I'm just cruising with nothing on the back. Plays havoc with the fuel economy when towing.
Will be interested to see what solution they come up with, and in addition to my own data I have made a note of your experience.

Hope they fix it for you mate.

The software version they installed last year as a "service campaign" to try to fix the DPF issues is: 3F059800

If they end up replacing your DPF, injector and injector housing they need to install software version:3F0M3000 which is the part of this newest attempt to fix the bloody DPF.

Only for specific DPF issues if they remain after the previous program, and only after multiple failures of a structured intensive burn & test program. I think you would have to unlucky like Grunf

Just to mention that there is a whole lot things happening behind the scenes (from Toyota side, not mine) in regards to DPF problems which I am not ready or willing to publicly disclose at this stage, but which makes me openly state that I will never buy another Toyota again (if it has a DPF fitted).

Here in NZ there is a new recall that has just been sent out this past week for this.
Previously it was only if you had issues.

I am guessing that massive hole in the middle isnt required anymore haha.

The chamber off to the side of the exhaust flow is not exactly aerodynamic and the associated turbulence is one of the key issues with the carbon build up over the injector port

The new housing also angles the injector a bit better so the spray pattern gets onto the catalyst better.
Previous housing tended to only get a small area of the catalyst which possibly helped create hot spots and increase failures of the dpf
