2010 Hilux sudden loss of power

Postby Shakeandbake on Mon, 26 Sep 2022 7:45 +0000

Hi All,

Was driving home tonight in my 2010 Hilux and lost power and engine light came on 100kms from home. It's currently on a tow truck and im in an Uber.

I was thinking blown turbo. Only has 110,000kms so im not even sure if that's what it could be. It still starts and runs fine but will only rev just above 2000rpm. I cant hear the turbo spooling.

Any help and ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

That's what happens if you have an engine fault that causes limp home mode... The engine light will likely indicate the fault and if you get an OBD reader it will tell you what the fault is. Leave it to the experts if you don't know what I'm talking about.
Search OBD here to get some idea what this means. If the engine starts and runs ok it's probably a simple problem.

Thanks Gipsy.

100% right, I will scan for faults and see what code it brings up. I guess no point in trying to guess what it could be. I have an OBD reader for another car but its not compatible with the Hilux. I work with a guy who was an auto electrician so he is going to lend me one of his decent scan tools / OBD reader.

Hopefully get it done in the next few days and see what it brings up

Cheers

Just as an emergency measure to clear the engine light you can disconnect the battery for a few minutes and reconnect. Beware though because this will clear the codes stored, but at least you can get home. Get yourself a wifi OBD reader and the software on your phone... Under $20 ;)

Just purchased a wifi OBD reader from Amazon so should be here by tomorrow. You are right they are cheap.
So cheap I bought 2 different brands just to make sure at least one of them works. It can stay in the ute for
any future mishaps

Now you need the phone software... I use Torque light (because it's free) ;) does all you need.

Just ran the OBD reader and it gave me a P0046 code so turbo related. From what I have read it could be a number of issues
with the turbo setup that brings up the P0046 code.

I checked the MAP sensor filter for any cracks and looks okay. Will replace with a new one anyhow.

So I reset code P0046 just to see what might be going on with the turbo and this was the result

Any ideas?

..for me it sounds that the turbowheel is touching the housing somewhere or that dirt is in the turbo.
