Oil usage

Postby fark on Fri, 13 Jul 2018 8:42 +0000

Since new, my Hilux has had slight oil consumption, it's nearly due for 30K service and is down about 5mm on the dipstick. Anyone else?

Id just make sure Toyota is aware of it. New engines can use a little until run in properly so is probably nothing.

Also try checking it when you get it back from a service, maybe they cant be bothered to add just a little more, or worse, they may do it deliberately, a pint of oil saved on every service adds up to a lot of dollars saved in a year.
I have had to take mine back for a top up shortly after a service when it was still under capped price.

I know my previous lux’s were very close to the low mark by the 10k mark.
Interesting fact I found out the other day on this note. Missus has a Audi A1. I complained about the oil usage of the vehicle. (Used basically 1.5 L over 15,000km)
Audi policy is that an acceptable level of oil consumption is 1/2 a liter per 1000km.
So I dare say Toyota would have a similar policy.

Yeah they have had it back to check "oil consumption" but say its within normal range - whatever.

It's always just over the line after a service, so it is being filled correctly.

Never had a Toyota use oil, bit disappointing.

1/2 litre in 1000 km??
That equals 5 litres in 10 000 km, don't sound right to me.

Me too I laughed at him and asked if he was kidding that’s an acceptable usage of 7.5L between service. The car doesn’t even hold that much oil. To say I wasn’t impressed is putting it mildly. And as for service as soon as the warranty is up bet I’ll be doing it myself. Never felt so ripped off in my life.

Most dealers use the same principle, customers are idiots(or they wouldn't be at the dealership) and their attitude doesn't change.

What happened to those landcruiser 200 V8 engines that were using oil - did anything ever come of that?

My outlaws had a Corolla that used oil - acceptable range was the response from the dealer. Close friends at the ACCC said to make sure toyota noted it on the service record so if anything happened during a reasonable out of warranty period. They sold the vehicle before anything happened so the out of warranty period was never tested.
I might be wrong.

2005 SR Hilux 1KD - SOLD
2009 BMW X5 - destroyed by a hail storm
2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 - SOLD
2015 Ford Ranger
